WORKSHOP = Erik Bean speaking live at an Ann Arbor freelance workshop.

EB WORKSHOP: A query
is simply a short letter about a proposed story or article you'd like to
sell a particular publication. Query letters should never be more
than one page long. Isn't that good news? Whenever you send
a query letter to a publisher for any magazine article that you're going
to write, you're only going to be sending out a one-page query letter.
How fantastic is that? Probably in 12-point text, with whatever font
you feel comfortable with.
Hey , this is the
new millennium. Did you ever grow up thinking you would have a favorite
font? I did. I'm in the Arial stage now. I like Arial,
I like Times New Roman. Of course those are the two most popular
fonts in which you will be submitting your query letters. I would
suggest putting it in 11.5 or 12-point font. Don't submit your material
in a 13-point font. Don't scream at your editor.
And never, never,
under any circumstances, editorialize when you are sending out a query
letter. Never say this is a fascinating story, about a wonderful
doctor who lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan (for example). That is
editorializing. That's not allowed. Let the doctor tell the story.
Most stories are successful when you let the sources in your story do the
talking. Let them tell the story and be the authoritative experts.
You get to shape it and you get to craft the story in the direction you
want it to go. You can never remove 100 percent of the biases out
of any non-fiction story.
You can see (Workshop
participants were given a query bullet list handout) that queries should
include:
-
A stimulating lead
-
A finely tuned angle
-
Length of the article
-
A working title
-
Summary of content
And use of anecdote
as example (also may be included). Everyone knows what an anecdote
is? It's simply a short story within a story.
-
Direct quotation (demonstrating
authority)
-
One or two sources (aside
from the author)
-
Information about art
(such as photos, drawings, etc)
-
Your signature
-
A short sentence on
clips (available published articles)
-
Or a bio if you don't
have published clips.
Now we're getting into
the good stuff, folks! Don't be intimidated by everything on this
sheet (Workshop query handout). Don't walk out of here feeling like
the size of a pea. 'Oh, Mr. Bean says we have to have all these points
or we won't get published.' Not necessarily true. The
bottom line is that this is just a guideline...
