    Independent Publisher’s Never Out-Dated
Writing Book Attracts Baker & Taylor, Nation’s
    Largest Book Distributor

Walled Lake Deadline Communications, a suburban Detroit based publisher of educational materials, announced this week that on Feb. 5, 2000 it was approved as a book publishing vendor for Baker and Taylor, the largest book distributor in the United States said Stacey Karr, Deadline Communications marketing director.

The independent publisher's first book offerings, Writing for Publication (softcover) and A Writing for Publication Guide (hardcover) are now available to traditional book stores like Barnes and Noble and will make The Online Magazine Article Writing Workshop at FreelanceWorkshop.com more accessible to new Internet surfers who continue to rely on in-store purchases to build their writing libraries, Karr added.

"Ours is truly the first writing book ever to be tied to a Website.  I can't think of any educational book in the writing reference section of any book store on or offline offering unlimited Website access to a writing resource after its been purchased."  This said Karr makes Writing for Publication by Erik Bean a book that will never go out-dated and is a great starting point not only for breaking into magazines but for using the accompanying Website and its "Participant Lounge" on an unlimited free basis.

Writing for Publication retails for $15.99 in paperback and $39.95 in cloth.  Deadline Communications has already received its first order from Baker and Taylor.  However, don't expect the book to be readily available in all bookstores said Karr.   "Most bookstores don't know what to make of it just yet and as a small independent publisher we are still up against the big fish."   Companies like Writers Digest and Henry Holt hold the lion's share of all writing guidebooks with more than 90 percent of the market.

But if local reaction is a measuring tool for the book's success, then Karr predicts Deadline Communications may have a winner on its hands.  Many Detroit area libraries have already purchased the book or its video counterpart to patrons interested in learning how to get published.

Auburn Hills, Ann Arbor District Library, Berkley Public Library, Blair Memorial Library (Clawson), Brighton Public Library, Detroit Public Library, Novi Public Library, Royal Oak Public Library, Southfield Library, Troy Public Library, Walled Lake Library, W. Bloomfield Library, are among others who have made a purchase.  "We get requests all the time for materials on how to write," said Auburn Hills Library Director, Janet Smigielski.

We are just planting a seed now, Karr said.  We don't see why the book (Website) won't someday be in the majority of libraries and freelancers hands.  "Getting the word out about how the book is paired with the Website is our biggest challenge over the next year."

To help that marketing effort Karr says the book's author Erik Bean will be conducting freelance writing workshops through Royal Oak, West Bloomfield, and Ann Arbor Community Education systems this May.  He also will appear at local bookstores to talk about freelancing.  "Erik has been conducting writing workshops across Michigan since 1993 and many alumni have kept in touch to update us on their publishing success."  These successes are posted on the FreelanceWorkshop.com Website.

We are fortunate students have kept in touch and are willing to share, admitted Karr.  "Erik enjoys teaching the workshops knowing he can help people build career credibility, earn extra income, and share their creativity." Having a foothold into retail bookstores with Baker and Taylor in conjunction with our many marketing efforts is a step in the right direction Karr concluded.
