     3. AUTHORITATIVE WRITING!

Writing in an authoritative fashion will help sell an
article everytime.  This is accomplished in three ways:

One, by demonstrating the use of transition words
     throughout the text.

While it is always a good idea for the writer to examine
and to a certain extent mimic the style of writing found
in other published articles within the targeted magazine,
varying the writing style will greatly help to maintain
the readers' attention and add much to his or her enjoyment.
     Words such as:

     However, therefore, subsequently, consequently,
on the other hand, notwithstanding, in addition, moreover,
hence, and what's more are all excellent examples of transition words.

Secondly, like any well-respected journalist, a prospective
author will want to carefully select the right people to
interview for inclusion in a story.  By selecting more
prominent and well-know experts as well as commentary that
is considerate to several sides of an issue, readers will
likely be more interested in the article convinced they are
absorbing fresh and up-to-date information on its topic.

The third way to demonstrate authority in writing is to
use the right type of words (adverbs) when attributing
paraphrases or quotes.  For example, only use "stated" when
the topic is a serious issue or life threatening.  But it is
always more authoritative to use "said" when ever possible.

     4. DREW'S MOVIE REVIEWS

In addition to great suggestions about writing for
publication on and offline, Byline Tips also will
feature Drew's Movie Reviews!  Drew is an independent
reviewer of the latest movies!  We know your passion is
writing, but who doesn't go to the movies?  With
increasing ticket costs, you'll be better prepared to
go or just stay home and write!

Here is what Drew has to say about this film:

Topsy Turvy: **** 4 Stars (*****5 is best)

Directed by Mike Leigh (Secrets & Lies and Career Girls),
starring Jim Broadbent, Allan Corduner, Timothy Spall,
     Dexter Fletcher & Wendy Nottingham

"Topsy Turvy" is about the relationship between Gilbert
& Sullivan during the Mikado period around 1885.  Mike
Leigh is a director who usually works without a script.
This is fascinating all by itself.  This time, he
ventures into the musical arena and behind the scenes.

Gilbert & Sullivan began to repeat themselves and become
stale with little new creativity. Jim Broadbent
(Little Voice) plays Gilbert, the writer and idea man.
As Gilbert, he is the directing genius who knows how to
get a point across without having much to work with as a
foundation.  His wife takes him to a Japanese exhibit and
then he begins to express some fresh ideas to contribute
for Sullivan.  The best scenes in the film are when Mike
Leigh shows the audience how difficult it is for a director
to share his vision with his players.  This is especially
effective when dealing with the actor's ego.

Mike Leigh knows when to use a close up without abusing
its power.  Allan Corduner (The Imposters) plays Sullivan,
the musician and substance abuser.  As Sullivan, he is the
maestro behind the lyrics.  There are some truly hilarious
scenes where Sullivan appears to be a puppet who ingests
brandy and morphine shots to begin his day.  He does a
splendid job at showing the pomposity of a man who feels
that he's been there and done that.  The dialogue between
the two provide some of the best acting of the year...
Gilbert appears to have some emotional problems with
his wife, while Sullivan would give Donald Trump a run for
     his money as a playboy.

If you love musicals, this may be your best picture of the
year.  For me, take out most of the songs, and it is flawless.
I understand the reason why it has to be there.  This picture
is complete, from the process, to behind the scenes, to the
acting, "Topsy Turvy" is one heck of a flick.  If I loved
musicals, I would grade it higher than I do.  It's running
time is approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes.  That's a Mike
Leigh film.  When he puts together a film, he leaves out very
little.  This is why when I hear a Mike, not Spike, Leigh
film is arriving shortly, I get excited as a movie fan.
Back in 1997, I had a Mike Leigh film (Secret's and Lies)
as the number two movie of the year behind "Sling Blade."
